Barnes appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Berne. Barnes is situated in the London Borough of Richmond. Barnes has a number of elegant 18th and 19thcentury buildings of exceptional quality and is often noted for its attractive village pond forming part of the Barnes village conservation area.
A permanent tourist attraction in Barnes is London Wetlands Center comprising over 40 hectares of artificial wetland created on the site of former reservoir as a bird sanctuary. Barnes has also a place in the history of football. Chris Patten the last UK Governor Hong Kong chose Barnes as the basis for his title when he was raised to the Peerage of the House of Lords in 2005 as Baron Patten of Barnes.
