Few little facts about Lewisham
Lewisham is a district in South East London and the principal settlement of London Borough of Lewisham. About the history of its name, Daniel Lysons (1796) wrote:
"In the most ancient Saxon records this place is called Levesham, that is, the house among the meadows; leswe, laes, laese, or laesew, in the Saxon, signifies a meadow, and ham, a dwelling. It is now written, as well in parochial and other records as in common usage, Lewisham."
Lewisham Cricket Club was one of the most prestigious London sides during the Victorian era which was closed in the later part of the 19th century. London Swimming Club was also very successful with several of their members representing England in the Water Polo and other gymkhana events.
The Sainsbury store in the Lewisham shopping center was briefly the largest supermarket in Europe.
David Rocastle, former England and Arsenal football player was born in Lewisham.
Denis Thatcher, Husband to Margaret Thatcher was also born in Lewisham.
