John Arnold, internationally renowned watch maker lived in Well Hall House in Eltham. Stephen Lawrence, an 18 year old black sixth former of Jamaican origin, was fatally stabbed at a Bus Stop in Eltham on 24th April 1993. Five White youths were arrested on suspicion of Mr Lawrence's murder and 2 of them charged, but the case collapsed due to the lake of evidence. However an inquest at Southwark Crown Court on 14th February 1997 conducted that Mr Lawrence death was the result of an 'unprovoked racist attack by five White Youths' and he was murdered just because he was black.
